There is a moment most programming students know well. You are stuck on an assignment, the deadline is closing in, and you open ChatGPT or Google Gemini and paste in your problem. Within seconds, code appears on your screen. It looks like it might work. You copy it, submit it, and breathe again.
That moment happens millions of times a day now. And according to brand new research from the RAND Corporation, it is happening far more often than even educators expected.
But here is the part most students do not talk about: it often does not end well.
The Numbers Are Bigger Than You Think
In March 2026, RAND published a report based on a nationally representative survey of over 1,200 students between the ages of 12 and 29. The findings were striking.
Between May and December 2025 alone, the share of middle school, high school, and college students using AI for homework jumped from 48% to 62%. That is a 14-point jump in just seven months. And it was not college students driving that number up , it was younger students, middle schoolers and high schoolers, who pushed the trend forward.
These students are not doing something unusual or rebellious. They are doing what students have always done when they feel overwhelmed: looking for the fastest path to a solution.
The problem is that AI is very good at looking like a solution, even when it is not one.
